Water Tower and Water Tower Place
Back
The Chicago Water Tower is located at 806 North Michigan Avenue along the Magnificent Mile shopping district in the Near North Side community area of Chicago, Illinois. The Water Tower serves as one of the Chicago Office of Tourism's Official Visitor's Centers.
Here are some factoids for the history buff: William W. Boyington built it in 1869 from yellowing Joliet limestone. It is 154 feet (47 m) tall. Inside was a 138-foot (42 m) high standpipe to hold water. It was supposed to be used for fighting fires, so it is pretty ironic that the tower gained prominence after the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. While some incorrectly believe that the tower was the only building to survive the fire, a few other buildings in the burned district survived along with the tower. The tower has become a symbol of old Chicago and of the city's recovery from the fire.
Here are some shopping tidbits for the fashionista: Right near the Water Tower is Water Tower Place, which is located at 835 N. Michigan Ave. Picture Eight-levels, 100 stores, restaurants, and parking. Uh-amazing! Plus, there are wheelchair, stroller, and taxi services available. You’ll find anything you need: apparel, accessories, art, jewelry, shoes, toys, and sports. Check http://www.shopwatertower.com/ for holiday hours.
