The Oriental Institute is a research organization and museum devoted to the study of the ancient Near East. Founded in 1919 by James Henry Breasted, the Institute, a part of the University of Chicago, is an internationally recognized pioneer in the archaeology, philology, and history of early Near Eastern civilizations.

Visible Language: Inventions of Writing in the Ancient Middle East: This exhibit shows visitors how scribes in the Middle East invented writing. Through tablets dating 32000 BC that have never been seen in the U.S. are shown here to take visitors on the journey of writing in ancient civilizations. Open Sept. 28, 2010 through March 6, 2011.
