Millennium Park is a fascinating tribute to the ambitious plans for Chicago in the 21st Century. As an award-winning center for music, architecture, landscape design, and the arts, Millennium Park serves as a modern-day landmark. Prior to its opening, the empty lot was an eyesore, covered with idle railroad tracks. In 1997, Mayor Richard M. Daley directed his staff to formulate a plan for a new music venue. With the combined efforts of the City of Chicago and the philanthropic community, the 24.5-acre park features the work of prominent designers, artists, planners and architects.

What's happening this summer season? New Music Mondays starts May 24th. Music Without Borders starts June 3rd. World Class Jazz begins July 29th. Ongoing events include contemporary sculpture from China and of course gazing at the Bean.

What's happened during the winter season? Well, each Friday, groups of carolers met at the Bean in Millennium Park for CHRISTMAS CAROLING AT THE CLOUD GATE. Afterwards, they hit the McCormick Tribune Ice Rink—one of Chicago’s most popular winter activities.

Other highlights include the Frank Gehry-designed Jay Pritzker Pavilion, the most sophisticated outdoor venue of its design in the nation; Anish Kapoor's innovative Cloud Gate sculpture on the SBC Plaza; the modern Lurie Garden designed by the team of Kathryn Gustafson, Piet Oudolf and Robert Israel; and the much celebrated Crown Fountain by Jaume Plensa.

After years of planning and fundraising, the park opened in July 2004. Since then, millions of people have visited this artistic masterpiece. For those who are unfamiliar with or curious about the park's history and architecture, visitor parties of 10 or less can enjoy a free walking tour with a Millennium Park Greeter. Tours will begin at the Millennium Park Welcome Center at 201 E. Randolph Street.

Various seasonal events and children's programs are also popular with the public. In the winter, guests may choose to rent skates or bring their own for an ice skating escapade. Throughout the summer months, Millennium Park hosts free concerts and events ranging from jazz, gospel, and music concerts to architectural and theater presentations to an outdoor photography exhibition and workouts on the Great Lawn. Family oriented programs with puppet-shows, contests and festivals are other great ways to spend a free afternoon. Chicago.com will always update you on the latest events!

For maps, visitor information and program guides, please stop into the Millennium Park Welcome Center at 201 E. Randolph St.
