The Chicago History Museum offers a unique look into Chicago and U.S. history. Many of the exhibits center around Chicago's specific neighborhoods growth and cultural history. There are over 22 million artifacts ranging from architecture to textiles to art. To view a list of their main collections visit the website.
Permanent Exhibits Chicago: Crossroads of America - Get an in depth look at Chicago's history, starting from when the city was formed to present day. Throughout the exhibit learn about Chicago's individual neighborhood, economic history and innovations.
Sensing Chicago - Use your five sense to explore the city. Throughout the exhibit visitors can catch a ball at U.S. Cellular Field, smell a Chicago-style hot dog and ride a high wheel bike.
The Dioramas - View Chicago come back to life after the elusive Chicago fire. The restored dioramas paint a picture of Chicago in ruins to present day.
Treasures - Buidling wide installations showcase items found around the city.
Things To Do in Chicago History Museum
This exhibit uses images, artifacts and interactive components to explore what it means to be free. Using American history as a guideline the exhibit follows the battles of different American groups to gain the elusive "freedom".
The museums first theatrical exhibit presents My Chinatown. The film showcases the sites and sounds of the Chinatown neighborhood. It includes interviews and stories from residents of the neighborhood, as well as discussing Chinese cultural traditions. The movie plays through March. Adults: $14 with audio tours
Seniors (65+): $12 with audio tours
Students (13–22 with ID): $12 with audio tours
Free for children (age 12 and younger)
Free for members of the Chicago History Museum, DuSable Museum, and National Museum of Mexican Art.
Admission includes two audio tours: "Chicago: Crossroads of America", a tour developed with the Second City (available in English and Spanish) and "In Our Own Words", a tour created by local teens (English). Ask for the audio tour at the visitors center
The Museum is free on Mondays.
