With a population of 6,828, Chicago's Near South Side is near the Illinois Institute of Technology and the Chicago White Sox's U.S. Cellular Field (Formerly Comiskey Park). It runs along Lake Michigan and has a very aesthetically pleasing shoreline. It is not as crowded as the nearby Loop area, but is growing quickly and developers are building at great speed due to the proximity to the downtown action. In fact, the city considers that this neighborhood will experience one of the city's biggest population increases over the next several years. Prices in the area are extremely competitive with the trendier (and, hence, more expensive) northern neighborhoods.

In contrast to the flurry of new construction, you can find the oldest building in Chicago, the Widow Clarke House, among the Prairie Avenue Historic District. This district is what remains of what was one of the most elite neighborhoods in Chicago in the late 19th century.

There are many residential high rise buildings along the lakefront. The historic Chicago Bee Newspaper Building is now a library and a great example of art deco architecture.

The Near South Side has convenient access to I-90 to the west, I-55 to the north, I-41 along the lake shore and the Green Line makes a stop at 35th street.  CTA busses run along several of its major thoroughfares.
